Update from Pastor Sean  |  April 25

Good Afternoon Church,

There are no words to express my gratitude for you! You all have stepped up, not only in moving towards online giving, but continually serving in our communities. Lives are being changed and the Gospel of Jesus is being shared as we continue to come together in the name of Jesus. THANK YOU for all that you have done and continue to do!

With that, I would like to give you a quick update on what this upcoming week looks like. This weekend, we will be going Live on Saturday at 5 pm and Sunday at 10 am with our Northway Family. We will be posting both worship sessions on our Facebook page as well as this link: https://go.northway.org/live/. You will also find Kids Church on this page. Just click the KIDS logo and you will find the lessons for your particular age group. I want to encourage you to continue to visit this page throughout the week, because new experiences for your kids will be posting mid-week. This is a great way to keep your kids busy and in the Word.

This Sunday (at noon), our Woman’s Ministry Team will be hosting a Zoom hangout. If you are looking for an opportunity to connect and do life with other women in the church, grab a coffee and some lunch and join in on the conversation. If you are interested in joining, contact Lisa K. at lisa@hccchurch.com and she will send you the link.

Thursday, April 29th, our Men’s Ministry will be meeting at 7:00 p.m. on zoom as we continue on in our Study of “The Godly Man”.  We would love for you to join us. Again, just reach out to me and I will add you to the invite list.

Friday at 7:30, we will be hosting a young adults “Alive” hangout on zoom. I will be sending out a separate email with the invite attached. If you would like to join us but did not receive an invite by 5:30 on Friday, please reach out to me with your email address so I can add you.

Lastly, as we continue to serve our own people in need and those affected by the virus, here are a few updates on how you can contribute and meet needs in our community.

On May 1 at the Northway Wexford Campus and on May 5th at the Dormont campus, we will be having a blood drive to help those affected by the virus. Here is the link to register. Type in the date and the locations will come up: Upcoming blood drive. Help save lives..

Upcoming blood drive. Help save lives.

Here's information about our upcoming American Red Cross blood drive. Schedule an appointment.

Today was the first day of collection for our “Care Packages for the Homeless”, and I was blown away by your generosity. We will continue to collect over the next few weeks on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9-12. Here is the list of items we are looking for:

shampoo (for both Caucasian and African American hair)

conditioner (for both Caucasian and African American hair)

shaving cream

body wash/soap

hand soap

razors

deodorant

toothbrushes

toothpaste

As always, if you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out.

With Nursing Homes not allowing visitors, it has not only been hard for families but for those living in the homes as well. So, we thought a way we could brighten their days is by sending them a card, letting them know we care about them and are praying for them. We have had a great response so far, but we still have a few more people that we would like to bless. So, if you have some extra time and are willing to send a card or two to brighten someone’s day, please let me know and I will send you a name, their room number as well as the address

To wrap up this email, once again I am so thankful for all of you. In a time of uncertainty and confusion, I believe we as a church have become stronger because of you and your desire to help others and see people come to Jesus. It is a joy to serve alongside you and an Honor to be your pastor. I hope you have a good weekend and I look forward to worshiping with you online.

I truly miss you all so much,

Sean

Easter Update | April 10

Good Evening Everyone,

First, I want to say thank you to everyone who has stepped up during this time of uncertainty to support Hillside through your tithes and offerings. Because of your generosity, we have been able to continue to support both our Local and Global Missions Partners that we have been in relationship with for quite some time now. We have also been able to maintain our building, help those in need, as well as support our staff during this challenging time. I cannot thank you enough.

In saying that, the reason I am sending this email out a day early is to remind you of a few things we have going on this weekend for the whole family to experience and be a part of.

Tomorrow at 5, we will be streaming our Good Friday Service on YouTube, Facebook, and on the Northway web site. As part of the service, we will be celebrating communion together. I would love for us all to partake in this along with our kids. All you will need is some juice and either crackers or bread. If you do not have juice, you can use cider or water.  Then for Easter, we will be going Live on Saturday at 5 and Sunday at 10 with our Northway Family. Again, you may see a familiar face on the stage, so be sure to dive in with us.  We will be posting both worship sessions on our Facebook page as well as this link: https://home.northway.org.

You will notice once you click on this link that Northway has made it really simple for you to navigate between live services, Kids and Students experiences, as well as updates on what is happening. If you click on the dropdown tab, there are other resources there for you to experience and be a part of including online small groups that we would like to launch shortly after Easter. Something else we are excited about is FOX has reached out to us about showing our service!  So, on Sunday at 11 am, FOX will be broadcasting our Service on TV. This is a great opportunity for us to share the Gospel with our city, so be sure to share this with family and friends and pray that many people will be touched through this new opportunity.

We have also been posting our Daily Holy Week Devotionals on social media. If you have not had the chance to dive in, here is the link to watch them: https://home.northway.org/easter.

Lastly, Lisa and the Northway Kids Teams has been working on providing some experiences for our kids throughout the week to keep them connected. Here is a fun online experience for the whole family to be a part of:https://Vimeo.com/402803930. All you need is some marshmallow peeps, toothpicks, socks, and a clothes basket…AND YOU ARE SET!

I know this has been a tough week for all of us, but let’s not forget that this week was hard on Jesus too. The same people who were praising Him on Sunday have now turned on Him and will send Him to the cross. As hard as it was for Jesus, He knew that wasn’t the end. It is through a relationship with Him that we can know that as well. Church, we are in challenging times, but it is how we choose to live, and lead, and worship now that will determine how we will be when we are on the other side of this.  I love you all and I can’t wait for the day that we can all worship and do life together in person. But until then, lets love like Jesus loves, and live in such a way that leaves no room for worry and negativity. Let our lives reflect Hope and generosity, not fear and resentment. And lastly, when others see us let them see a God who is not in the grave…BUT ALIVE AND MOVING IN AND THROUGH HIS PEOPLE. I hope you all have a great weekend and I look forward to worshiping with you on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Update | Friday, April 3

Good Afternoon Church.

This is your Friday Hillside Family Update about what all is happening in the life of the church. Over the past couple weeks, out church staff, our board, along with our North Way staff, have been spending many days and hours in prayer for you specifically. We pray for good health and protection over your homes and your finances, we pray for renewed faith and opportunities to see Jesus in the center of uncertainty, and we pray that in moments like this, our people (God’s People) will stand up and shine the light of Jesus in this season that seems so dark. Church, we are for you, we are here for you…and you are not alone. WE LOVE YOU!

With that, I want to give you a few updates on what this upcoming week will look like as we enter into Holy Week. This weekend we will be going Live on Saturday at 5 and Sunday at 10 with our Northway Family.

Beginning this Sunday (Palm Sunday) we will be posting a daily devotional lead by the leadership teams at our 7 campuses that will be walking us through what happened that specific day that lead Jesus to the cross. I would love for us all to do this together.

Lastly, next Friday we will be having a Good Friday Service online. Together we will celebrate communion (so make sure you have some grape juice and some bread) as we take some time to remember all that Jesus has done and why He did what He did on the cross. You will not want to miss this special gathering.

As I wrap up this email, I want to share with you a song that my wife and I have been meditating on this week as we continue to settle into this season of uncertainty. For many of us we can’t help sometimes but to wonder and question what in the world is God doing. I also know as we continue on… feelings of anxiety, worry, and fear become so loud… that the soft, ever-present voice of God can sometimes be hard to hear. Just know this very moment as you are reading this email, Jesus is calling your name and wants nothing more than for you to know that His favor is upon you, that He is with you in your weakness, that He is before you, and HE IS FOR YOU! The song I want to share with you is called The Blessing by Kari Jobe and her husband Cody Carnes. Here is the link: http://fbvidthis.com/v/Zp6aygmvzM4. Take a moment, be still and listen to this song. Many of us need to hear this right now.

Remember…God is still in control so stand firm and be strong and remember where our help comes from - Jesus!

I hope you all have a good weekend and I look forward to worshiping with you online this weekend.

Love Always,

Update from Pastor Sean | March 27

Good Afternoon Church Family,

As we approach the end of week 2 of us doing our part to flatten the curve and stop the spread of Covid-19, I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy, as well as doing your best in keeping your distance so that this virus can begin to subside. I encourage you to continue to see the good that is happening, despite all the uncertainty around us at this moment. I also hope that your time with your loved ones have been lifegiving and full of memorable moments whether you physically can be with them or not. Many of us cannot see some of our loved ones as we practice social distancing, but we have been given the time to connect and check in with them with phone calls, video and text messages and maybe conversations from a far. Continue to use this time to reconnect with your loved ones.

With that, I want to give you a few updates on what this upcoming week will look like, as well as some opportunities for you to connect with other people in our church community.

This weekend we will be going Live on Saturday at 5 and Sunday at 10 with our Northway Family. We will be posting both worship sessions on our Facebook page as well as this link: https://home.northway.org. You will notice once you click on this link that Northway has made it really simple for you to navigate between live services, Kids and Students experiences, as well as updates on what is happening. If you click on the dropdown tab, there are other resources there for you to experience and be a part of.

One thing I am really excited about is Online Small Groups. Beginning today, if you are interested in joining an Online Small Group lead by myself or a few of our staff, I want to encourage you to clink on this link and fill out the information. You will notice at the bottom it will say location, just click hillside and I will get that information to plug you into a group that we hope to roll out here shortly. Here is that link: https://my.northway.org/portal/onlinegiving?online_giving=/donate/mpform&form_id=1333&allow_mp_form_guest=1&guest=1.

A few other things coming up this week is, on Tuesday, we will be hosting a woman’s event called THE WELL. Again, that can be found on the website above as well as our Hillside Facebook page. Also, on Tuesday at 5:00p.m. we will be having a night of worship. I would love for us all to tune in and worship together. Then on Thursday at 5 we will continue to host our Fireside Chats, which I have found to be really helpful during this time of uncertainty.

Another thing I am so thankful that we can now provide is a Food Bank to our community. So, if you or anyone in our congregation is in need, please personally respond to me (Pastor Sean) and I will make arrangements for you as early as next week to get you what you need. Please, do not hesitate to ask.

Lastly, as we all continue to walk through this difficult time together, I would like to share with you some encouragement that I found in Psalm 104 4-14:

4 The winds are your messengers; flames of fire are your servants.

5 You placed the world on its foundation so it would never be moved.

6 You clothed the earth with floods of water, water that covered even the mountains.

7 At your command, the water fled; at the sound of your thunder, it hurried away.

8 Mountains rose and valleys sank to the levels you decreed.

9 Then you set a firm boundary for the seas, so they would never again cover the earth.

10 You make springs pour water into the ravines, so streams gush down from the mountains.

11 They provide water for all the animals, and the wild donkeys quench their thirst.

12The birds nest beside the streams and sing among the branches of the trees.

13 You send rain on the mountains from your heavenly home, and you fill the earth with the fruit of your labor.

14 You cause grass to grow for the livestock and plants for people to use. You allow them to produce food from the earth

I love this passage because it talks about the Authority that Our God has over this earth. Verse 4 talks about the wind being Gods messenger; Verse 8 talks about mountains and valleys coming to be at the command of the Father! Church…if we believe that God created this world then we know without a doubt that what He cares most about… is this world and His people in it. God is still in control so stand firm and be strong and remember where our help comes from - Jesus!

I hope you all have a good weekend and I look forward to worshiping with you online this weekend.

Love Always,

Update : Friday March 20

Good Afternoon Church Family,

As we approach a week of doing our part to flatten the curve and stop the spread of Covid-19, I know many of you are working overtime whether you work in healthcare, in our essential stores, restaurants providing take out, mail and delivery services, etc. I know many of you are adjusting to working from home and helping educate your children, many times balancing both throughout the day. Others are feeling the pinch in their small business or having their job negatively impacted. I hope, in these times of uncertainty, that you are finding moments to stop, be still, and reflect on the hope that we all have in Jesus. I hope you see the good that is happening around us in the midst of chaos. I hope you are enjoying your time with your loved ones. I ask that you continually pray for those making the tough decisions, the ones that are suffering from the sickness, the ones whose jobs and businesses are impacted, and the ones on the front lines working every day to keep the public safe and supplied.

I want to give you a quick update on what this upcoming week looks like. This weekend we will be going Live on Saturday at 5 and Sunday at 10 with our Northway Family. Pay attention to worship, you may see a familiar face on the stage! We will be posting both worship sessions on our Facebook page as well as this link: https://go.northway.org/live/. You will also find Kids Church on this page. Just click the KIDS logo and you will find the lessons for your particular age group. I want to encourage throughout the week to continue to visit this page, because they will be posting mid-week experiences for your kids to help keep them busy and stay connected in the Word.

Next Tuesday, we will be hosting a parenting experience (both on Facebook and Northway Live) and then on Thursday another Fireside chat experience. I will email and post times as we get a little closer to that day.

Lastly, as we all continue to walk through this difficult time together, I know many jobs are in transition and forcing many of us to rethink our budgets and prioritizing what we consider to be a necessity. We, too, are working hard at continuing to maintain our building, support our staff, support our local and global mission partners, as well as our Hillside Family. So if you are able, we want to encourage everyone to continue to give. You can do that one of two ways:

1)   Shelly our Office Administrator continues to check the mail a few times during the week, so feel free to drop your offering in the mail

2)  Or you can give online at: https://hillsidechristiancommunity.org/give. Just click “Give” and it will walk you through a couple of easy steps.

Romans 15:13 says May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. My hope and prayer for us all despite what is going on in our world right now, that we all would rest in the Fathers hands trusting that in uncertain times when weakness, fear, and anxiety show its face…that our God is above it all. Trusting that the same spirit that was with Jesus that day he rose from the grave is with us right now fighting our battles on our behalf. Stand firm church…God is doing something big.

Love You All

Letter from Pastor Sean  |  Wednesday March 18

To My Hillside Family,

Let me start by sharing that as a staff we have been continually praying for you this past week. It was a hard decision to not gather this past Sunday, but we do believe it was the best one. I hope you were able to tune in to Northway Wexford’s live streamed service this past weekend. If you missed it, it is still available on their website as well as ours. It was an amazing service and I hope you were encouraged by Pastor Dave’s message of Hope and not fearing what is to come, because of what we have been promised through our Savior Jesus Christ.

I would love to share with you some exciting news that came from the live streamed service. This past Sunday, a little over 44,500 people participated in our Northway service in 34 different countries! Church, we were able to worship with our people in Haiti as well as a few thousand people in Italy. Our God has a way of taking something so scary and isolating and turning it into an opportunity to still collectively praise Him. How amazing is that?

With the uncertainty of when we will be able to physically worship again, our Northway family will be providing different experiences through the week on social media for us to connect, dive into the Word, and continue to do life together. Our first gathering will take place tomorrow March 19th on Facebook at 5:00p.m.  I encourage you to join Pastor Dave along with our Northway leadership team as they share what is to come over the next couple weeks and what these opportunities look like for us to still do life together. We will be posting this on our Hillside Facebook page!

Lastly, let me end on this. This past Tuesday, our staff met for a time of prayer, devotion, and to discuss next steps. I shared with our team a passage of scripture from Exodus that I would also like to share with you. Right after God’s people were freed from slavery under the leadership of the pharaoh of Egypt, Gods people had to leave rather quickly. Scripture tells us that God had hardened the heart of Pharaoh and as a response, Pharaoh sent hundreds of his men on chariots to capture Gods people once again. As the Lords people began to panic Exodus 14:13-14, tells us that, “Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today? The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” Church, more than ever I believe we need to understand that the Lord is fighting for us this very moment. We are called to be still and be patient on the Lord because Salvation is coming.

So, what does that look like for you? I know I can’t speak for us all, but I know for myself, I am using this time to slow down, be with my family and reflect on what it is the Lord may be trying to teach me during this time. I can’t stress enough how important it is to submit to the leadership that is doing its best to bring this virus to a standstill. What they are asking of us may be an inconvenience, but in no way is it immoral and it is what’s best for this to come to an end. So together, lets practice being wise, lets practice safe distancing, and for the time-being, only being away from home when it is absolutely necessary.

I look forward to the day when we can worship physically together again, but until that time comes let us be wise and continue to do life together through other platforms that able us to stay connected and worship as one body.

We love you all,

Pastor Sean

From Pastor Sean | Friday March 13

Hey Church Family, here is our Friday update of decisions related to our schedule of events, gatherings and services for our Hillside location.  First, here is some background.

Make no mistake, our world is in the midst of a crisis, the proportions of which I am not an expert to determine.  When we face moments like this, sometimes we have to break or change from our routines in order to best respond to the situation at hand.

That said, I am reminded, guided by and convinced of the eternal hope we share in Jesus.  I know God has given us a spirit of love, of power and of self-control and not a spirit of fear.  I know and sense a peace that surpasses all understanding because God is before, in the middle of and at the end of this situation we face.

It is out of that spirit and sense of peace, that we as a leadership team, have come to a spirit led decision to not gather physically this weekend here at Hillside.

Even though we are not meeting physically, the blessing of being a part of such an amazing family through Northway is we still have an opportunity to do life together through services for both children and family that will be livestreamed this weekend.  Here are some additional details:

  • Live Stream Services - We will be live streaming a service on Saturday at 5pm and also on Sunday at 10 am. These services will include worship led by many of our campus worship directors, a specific sermon from Pastor Dave D’Angelo about our response to the situation at hand, and a special moment of prayer at the close of our service. You will not want to miss this. Join us at www.northway.org/live

  • Building Use - We are closing all of our locations for all events for the week of March 14-21 in order to thoroughly deep clean our facilities.  The only exception to this weeklong building closure is our Counseling center.

  • Weekly Events – All Events (Bible Study, Men’s Ministry, Youth Ministry) that will take place this upcoming week will be postponed. Please be on the lookout for ministry specific communication from your leaders.

Please know, as of today we are working on a week to week basis in terms of decisions regarding Hillside schedule and buildings.  The situation at hand is unprecedented and is rapidly changing, new territory for us all. In order to make decisions with the most amount of information and to be as prayerful as possible, we will continue to communicate on Fridays about the following week’s schedule at our campuses.

Now, I know that for some of us this is going to be viewed as the right decision.  Others will see it differently. I understand that. And I’m sure the big question is about the why behind this decision.

After much prayer and discussion at our leadership tables, we feel that moving online is the best way to care for the people who call Hillside home, as well as the many more thousands of people who live, work and play in the communities surrounding our location.  Additionally, in accordance with our governing authorities’ recommendations for large gatherings of people, moving online is something we can do to help flatten the curve of coronavirus and at the same time be For Pittsburgh.

If you really consider it, the good news is that as a church, Hillside is not a building.  We are a people. And while we may not be gathering this weekend in our usual locations, we can still unite together online at our two live stream services – at 5 pm on Saturday and 10 am on Sunday.

For all other details and questions, please continue to check our website or reach out to your ministry leaders.

We’ll See you this weekend online.  May God continue grant us all hope, healing and peace in the middle of this storm.  Keep praying … breakthrough is coming.
